Magnum Innovations is proud to be the energy management solution provider for Kent State University, located in Kent Ohio. Kent State is one of the largest universities in Ohio, with an enrollment of over 41,000 students. It is ranked by the Carnegie Foundation as one of the top 77 public research universities in the US and one of the top 76 in community engagement. The university was established in 1910 as an institution for training public school teachers.

Energy management is important to the facilities team and to the students at Kent State. The energy management office ensures that the energy dollars utilized to provide for the university community are used as efficiently and cost effectively as possible. This is done through energy conservation, education, purchasing strategies, sophisticated building automation systems and other new technologies, such as motion sensors and programmable thermostats provided by Magnum .

Thanks in part to the dorm room automation technology provided by Magnum, Kent State has been able to reduce their energy consumption by nearly 22 percent. To date, Magnum’s technology is included in 4,250 dorm rooms, which amounts to over 22,000 wireless points of control on campus. Kent State is one of Magnum’s longest run and largest deployments of wireless technology. The dorm rooms on campus have occupied, unoccupied control, central access control for the HVAC and full monitoring capabilities. The devices in the dorm room include wireless, battery free motion sensors, wireless thermostats, controlled power strips and window sensors.

Kent State selected Magnum primarily because of the limited maintenance associated with their dorm room solution. With no batteries to replace, Kent State will save over 300,000 batteries over the course of 20 years. The installation of the wireless solution also saved the university considerable dollars due to the system’s simplicity.
